Maybe you were a knight, valiantly fighting the dragons that still plagued the earth. A princess watched you from a high tower, her golden hair hanging out the thin window. The castle loomed in the distance, dark and forboding, a clear warning to visitors that they were not welcome.

Maybe you were a quiet, shy Victorian lady. You had been trained in poise, grace, literature. Gentlemen flocked to your aid at the wave of a fan. You were nightly swept off your feet in graceful dances and enchanting conversation. The men dominated the room but everyone knows who was really in charge.

Maybe you were a lonely widow, caught between the oncoming Union and the proud Confederate. With your husband lost to the body count of the Civil War, you are falling to the temptations of a young Confederate soldier. When his unit retreats, you are again left alone, unless your slaves count for good company.

Maybe you were a roughened cowboy, tired from a long day of riding the back trails of your ranch. After all that hard work, you settle into the local saloon for a drink. The ladies will keep you company but you are keeping an eye out for the inevitable fight between drunk guests and the saloon keeper.

Maybe you were a devoted jazz fan, updating his collection with each new album that comes out. But when Pearl Harbour is taken for target practice, you are pulled from safety and thrown into the trenches of Germany, looking through the scope of a gun. In a deafening air raid, your buddies fall to the ground.

Maybe you were a watchman, dutifully protecting the dictator of your continent. You carefully guard against the Underground as it threatens the only life you know, controlled as it may be. But when it comes right down to it, you're just like anyone else trying to survive in the harsh new world.
